Mỗi kiểu dáng công nghiệp được sáng tạo ra đều mang đậm dấu ấn của tác giả, việc áp dụng kiểu dáng đó trong kinh doanh mang lại lợi nhuận to lớn cho chủ sở hữu. Kiểu dáng công nghiệp cũng là một đối tượng được bảo hộ quyền sở hữu công nghiệp theo quy định của pháp luật. Những kiểu dáng công nghiệp có khả năng áp dụng công nghiệp để làm mẫu chế tạo hàng loạt sản phẩm có hình dáng bên ngoài giống nhau giúp rút ngắn các khâu trong việc chế tạo và sản xuất.

Thời gian để được cấp văn bằng bảo hộ kiểu dáng công nghiệp kể từ lúc nộp đơn là 10-12 tháng. Hồ sơ đăng ký kiểu dáng công nghiệp được pháp luật sở hữu trí tuệ quy định bao gồm các giấy tờ sau:

–          Tờ khai đăng ký kiểu dáng công nghiệp (theo mẫu);

–          Bộ ảnh chụp hoặc bộ bản vẽ kiểu dáng công nghiệp;

–          Bản mô tả kiểu dáng công nghiệp;

–          Chứng từ nộp phí, lệ phí.
