Tuy nhiên, Mèo Vạc lại được trời ban cho điều kiện tự nhiên thuận lợi để sản xuất mật ong.
Sản phẩm mật ong ở đây gắn liền với nguồn mật được sản xuất từ cây nguồn mật bạc hà có nguồn gốc duy nhất tại Cao nguyên đá Đồng Văn – Hà Giang. Được biết: “Mật ong Mèo Vạc có nguồn gốc thực vật hoa bạc hà quý hiếm, không những có lợi cho sức khỏe mà còn có nhiều đặc tính biệt dược quý. Sản phẩm gắn liền với đời sống của người Mông và các hoạt động văn hóa du lịch tại Cao nguyên đá Đồng Văn – công viên địa chất toàn cầu do UNESCO công nhận”. Loài cây nguồn mật nơi đây đáp ứng được các điều kiện nhất định để tạo nên hương vị ngọt mát dịu, màu sắc vàng đỏ đến vàng chanh, không bị đổi màu theo thời gian đặc biệt duy nhất chỉ có ở mật ong Mèo Vạc . Ngoài ra “do tính chất đặc thù của nghề nuôi ong tại Cao nguyên đá Đồng Văn có tính chất thời vụ, do đó Quy trình kỹ thuật nuôi ong lấy mật được xây dựng dựa trên nguyên tắc kết hợp hài hòa giữa các kiến thức bản địa nuôi ong tại Cao nguyên đá Đồng Văn và các kỹ thuật nuôi ong tiên tiến đang áp dụng tại Việt Nam cũng góp phần đảm bảo duy trì tính ổn định về chất lượng của sản phẩm mật ong bạc hà Mèo Vạc”. Từ những điều kiện nêu trên, đáp ứng được các điều kiện để sản phẩm mật ong bạc hà Mèo Vạc được bảo hộ như chỉ dẫn địa lý.
Do đó, ngày 01 tháng 03 năm 2013, Cục sở hữu trí tuệ đã ban hành Quyết định số 361/QĐ-SHTT về việc cấp Giấy chứng nhận đăng ký chỉ dẫn địa lý số 00035 cho sản phẩm mật ong bạc hà Mèo Vạc và Nhà nước cũng đã bàn giao cho đơn vị quản lý chỉ dẫn địa lý này thuộc về Sở KH & CN tỉnh Hà Giang. Với chỉ dẫn địa lý nói trên, người dân Mèo Vạc nói riêng và Hà Giang nói chung có quyền tự hào về sản phẩm mà địa phương mình làm ra. Việc xây dựng và bảo vệ thương hiệu này sẽ góp phần phát triển tài sản sở hữu trí tuệ Việt Nam.
